I don’t support using AI to create “art” because it steals from actual artists. I also don’t support using AI to “write” and claim that content as your own or use it write anything other than like an email draft. I’m okay with AI in some other instances. I’ve had to use it for work (I didn’t have a choice) so I’ve gotten familiar with it. For example, I asked if help me better write my negotiation email for work. I think it’s okay to have it assist with these things. We definitely should not be putting our creative writing into AI. Why? Because it uses that to train. Now your work has been stolen. (I’m adding these note for others, not you Hazel, as I think some people don’t know these things.) I’ve also used AI to help me create a marketing plan. I do think it’s okay to use but not for anything where it steals from humans.
I find... I do not like it for writing, creating post is hard enough but without an image... I get less responses and I don't have time to create an image for every post, so use it there... I respect your opinion dear one, But I draw the line at unsubscribing over such trival stuff.
I think there are options for images without having to resort to it. Like SubStack even has the option to use stock photos in your toolbar when making posts. I get where you're coming from here, but I am allowed to handle my online presence in a way which holds true to my beliefs.
I think I'll say the route I'm going to take though is more about not engaging with anything that has AI in it. So I probably won't unsubscribe every single time, but I'm not going to share, like, or comment on stuff that has AI in it.
I’m with you. I am against using AI for writing and art. I used to be for it for personal use to try something out or for research. However, since I have learned how much resources a single query uses and how detrimental it is to the environment, I am now against it. Hell, Microsoft restarted Three Mile Island for the sole purpose of running their AI. That’s it. Also, many of these AI companies have exploited real humans who’ve worked for them to train their AI. Most often in horrible conditions to the detriment of their mental and physical health. Terrible!
Generative AI produces crap and people need to quit using it outside of personal use. If you need to use it for personal reasons, please download one of the many options that use your local machine instead of being connected to the internet. At least it won’t continue destroying the world beyond what your laptop consumes.
I'm on your side! Not to put too fine or snarky a point on it...but it's craziness to me that on SUBSTACK of all places, people (who apparently hold their writing and creativity in such high regard that they're okay charging others for it) push back when someone says that maybe offloading creativity onto brainless computers is bad (and lame and embarrassing, if you ask me). Bloggers survived the turmoil of Googling header images for decades before. I promise your AI-generated image full of errors and misspellings isn't making your writing look better.
Oh my God, thank you! No you're not alone, but I was starting to think I was! I just started being active on Substack a couple weeks ago and was floored by the amount of AI images I was seeing alongside posts and notes so effusive about how wholesome and supportive this community supposedly is for small time writers and creators. It felt so discordant. I really appreciate your commitment!
I believe as artists and people with our own platforms we're allowed to have standards over the types of content we support. With AI Art being trained on art from actual artists, and often unconsented upon, it remains unethical in my mind to support or endorse it. AI may feel like a tool to help benefit consumers, but it also wastes huge amounts of water and energy.
While I'd like to encourage others to not use it, I also understand that every person is their own individual and will make their own decision. Those people will probably still find their audiences, but I don't have to be a part of it.
I feel like your questions are going down a rabbit-hole. Because while yes I'm supporting and enforcing my own beliefs on my own platforms, its not stopping anyone from doing anything.
Your insight is appreciated and leaves room for thought, so thank you for that. However it doesn't change my stance.
Banksy wasn’t considered art and still isn’t by many. Artists as gatekeepers has always been a terrible idea—that’s for sure. We wouldn’t have rock music, rap music, music videos, graffiti — modern dance, the list goes on and on. One could argue if not for Michael Jackson TikTok would not exist…the short form music videos taught us we want short form entertainment in bursts. If we allowed current artists to dictate where art was going next, we would be in the dark ages still drawing on rocks. Let’s explore people!!

I appreciate the added context, and I agree with you V.

Thank you for sharing though

It blows my mind that supporting human beings and artists over a literal algorithm is somehow a hot take.
Needless to say, I agree wholeheartedly with all your points here, Hazel, and I appreciate you taking a stance on this! 👏🏻
I’m going to have to ponder on this piece, thought provoking! Thanks for taking the time to address an important issue.

I don’t support it either, not for images, not for music, certainly not for writing.

"it also wastes huge amounts of water and energy."
I wonder if there is a cost comparison on this and does the artist 'waste' their water and energy too?
