Poem: The Argument
A poem about the 2024 election, comparing it to two parents arguing while kids listen or watch.
The Election has ended, and the results came in, leaving us perhaps even more dazed and confused. Or shocked, disappointed, sad, and scared. It’s okay if you feel any of those things— or if you feel proud of how it turned out, let me know so I can swiftly remove you from my circles.
Now, onto what this post is for. I’ve seen a lot of posts and memes comparing the Election to things like Gender reveals or custody battles. So the latter is what I went with when writing. And if your confused after reading the poem, there are some quick additional notes reiterating what I just said.
So anyway, here it is:
Do you hear The voices talking From outside Your room and Down the stairs? Arguing about who Knows best for their Children. A civil mother, A declining father, And millions of Children taking sides. Unsure of Which one gets Custody. And unsure of Whether they’ll be Safe again. The mother goes Silent just as the kids Make up their mind. While the father Laughs and sneers Eagerly for what Comes next.
Some additional notes:
This is a poem which discusses the US 2024 Election, likening Kamala’s and Trump’s respective candidacies to two parents arguing an implied divorce. Neither of the candidates are actually married to each other, that’d be crazy. This is just a allegory for the Election.
Thank you for taking the time to read that. I know there’s been a lot of political content being posted online recently, which can be tiring. And it is, it’s exhausting. There’s so much hurt right now, and people need reassurance and to grieve. It’s troubling to be in possibly a much, much worse boat than we were back in 2016.
If you enjoyed reading this poem, or have thoughts you want to add or share, please leave a comment. Sharing it would also be appreciated, but I’ll leave that stuff up to you guys. Stay safe, stay strong, and stay alive.
