From the Archive: Lost in the Boat.
A poem about love and loss written back in 2022.
Occasionally I like to pull poems from other platforms I’ve written on. The most common one I pull from is AllPoetry, which is where the poem you’ll be reading was initially posted to.
Now, if you don’t know what AllPoetry is, it’s essentially a website for poets made by poets. You can post your own, comment on other people’s works, participate in contests, and more.
It sounds really cool right? I do recommend joining— though if you do, keep in mind you have to comment on other people’s work after you post. It’s just two comments for each poem you put up. And this is to keep people from posting a hundred pieces only to be disappointed when they get no feedback.
See my profile below.
Okay, time for the poem.
Lost in the Boat
There is a boat in the middle of the ocean and
Two people sit together, holding hands and smiling.
Her dark hair, their brown hair, meshing together
As if they were fireworks exploding in the night sky.
She makes them laugh, and their smile is bigger
Than an entire iceberg floating amidst the sea.
The blush of her face compliments the warmth of
The hug the two shared together that evening.
Waves gently push the boat, letting it rock back
And forth, creating a sense of playfulness there.
She pushes them and giggles, and the other
Gives her a slight shove in response, smiling aloft.
“I wonder of the stars,” They ponder to her,
“If their beauty comes close to matching that of
Your smile, or that of the way you laugh.”
They grab her hands and stares lovingly into their
Ever shining eyes, and their cheeks grow redder.
“Could they ever match the way you make me feel?”
She doesn’t say a word, but her hands respond.
The two embrace in silence while the stars above
Brighten with modest integrity, letting the rest
Of the world feel their moment of love.
Until the moment passes and she disappears,
Leaving them to process the memories alone.
When each dream had felt so real to their eyes-
The cold of the ocean water spraying them with mist.
The breeze of the wind ruffling their hair as if it
Were an old lover attempting to tease them.
And the instant in which the sailboat had turned over,
Leaving one to drown and the other to survive.
The gasping as they panicked for air to breathe,
Only to find them-self awoken and covered in sweat.
Bottles of unopened meds left on the floor next
To an unmade bed and a pile of laundry beside them.
If only the memories could fade like waves in the sea,
And clouds to make way for more sunnier days.
Without something eating them whole,
Maybe then they could finally heal.Note: One character is referred to as a She, the other is referred to as a they. This is intentional.
